Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and reading time — instantly, as you type.
Everything runs in your browser — your text is never uploaded, and the counts update as you type. Here is exactly how each number is calculated, so you can trust it:
One of the most common reasons to count is to fit a specific limit. These are the caps writers run into most often:
| Platform / field | Limit |
|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post | 280 characters |
| SMS text message | 160 characters per segment |
| Google search title | ~60 characters |
| Google meta description | ~155–160 characters |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 characters |
| Facebook post (best engagement) | ~40–80 characters |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 characters |
| YouTube description | 5,000 characters |
| US Common App essay | 650 words |
| UCAS personal statement (UK) | 4,000 characters / 47 lines |
Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute (wpm), a typical silent reading speed for adults on general-audience text — dense or technical writing reads slower, and skimming reads faster. Speaking time assumes about 130 wpm, a comfortable pace for presentations, voiceovers, and speeches. That makes word count a quick way to size a talk:
"How many pages is my essay?" depends on font, size, and spacing, but for a standard 12-point Times New Roman document these approximations are reliable:
If you write for search, a few counts matter more than the rest. Keep your page title tag to roughly 50–60 characters so it is not truncated in results, and your meta description near 150–160 characters. There is no magic word count for ranking, but in-depth articles that fully answer a query tend to perform well, and many competitive topics are covered in 1,000–2,000+ words. Length should follow the topic — padding to hit a number rarely helps.
Does this word counter save or upload my text? No. All counting happens locally in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
How many words is a 5-minute speech? About 650 words at a normal speaking pace of ~130 wpm. Slow down for emphasis and it may be closer to 550–600.
How long does it take to read 1,000 words? Roughly 4–5 minutes of silent reading at 200 wpm.
How many pages is 1,000 words? About 2 pages single-spaced, or 4 pages double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman.
Do spaces count as characters? Usually yes — most platforms count spaces. This tool shows both totals so you can meet either rule.
