How each count is measured

Everything runs in your browser — your text is never uploaded, and the counts update as you type. Here is exactly how each number is calculated, so you can trust it:

• Words — the text is split on spaces and line breaks, and empty fragments are ignored. A hyphenated term like "self-esteem" counts as one word, and so does "twenty-one". Numbers and standalone symbols separated by spaces each count as a word.
• Characters — every character is counted, including spaces, punctuation, and emoji. A separate "characters without spaces" total is shown for fields that ignore whitespace.
• Sentences — detected by sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?). Abbreviations such as "Dr." or "e.g." can occasionally add one to the count, because the tool cannot always tell an abbreviation from a full stop.
• Paragraphs — blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines. A single line break inside a block does not start a new paragraph.
• Average word length — characters (no spaces) divided by words. A rising average often signals denser, harder-to-read phrasing.

Keep your page title tag to roughly 50–60 characters so it is not truncated in results, and your meta description near 150–160 characters. There is no magic word count for ranking, but in-depth articles that fully answer a query tend to perform well, and many competitive topics are covered in 1,000–2,000+ words. Length should follow the topic — padding to hit a number rarely helps.

• Cut filler: "in order to" → "to"; "due to the fact that" → "because"; "at this point in time" → "now".
• Prefer active voice — it usually needs fewer words and reads more directly.
